Barack Obama

Barack ObamaBarack Obama could make history as the first African American president. The first-term senator from the Midwestern state of Illinois made a splash on the national scene during his speech at 2004 Democratic National Convention. Reaction to his performance was overwhelmingly positive as commentators, journalists and politicians began referring to Obama as a contender for the 2008 presidential election.

The primary issue that sets him apart from Republican John McCain is that Obama has strongly opposed the war in Iraq from its outset.

His political journey took only 11 years. In 1997, he was elected to the state senate of Illinois. In 2004, he won a seat in the national senate in Washington, D.C., becoming only the fifth African-American to serve in the U.S. Senate.
